01- WMHTR

  • The London Women’s MHTR Service provides short-term (10-12 sessions) court-ordered community-based psychological therapy for women who cross the community/custody threshold at sentencing. The service works with women who have mental health difficulties that were present at the time of offending. The aim of the service is to increase Wellbeing, reduce reoffending, and to provide alternatives to short custodial sentences. MHTRs can be combined with an Alcohol Treatment Requirement (ATR) or Drug Rehabilitation requirement (DRR), and the service will work alongside the relevant ATR/DRR provider to ensure consistency.

About This Service

The London Women's MHTR Service provides mental health treatment requirements to women across all London boroughs. Mental Health Treatment Requirements (MHTRs) are a sentencing option available to the court at the time of sentencing as part of a community order or suspended sentence order, providing an alternative option to a short custodial sentence or less appropriate community order. As part of the MHTR service users receive short-term psychological therapy, which looks to address the link between their mental health and their offending, or may be offered the MHTR by their existing mental health team where they are already open to one.

Who We Support

The service works with women, or those who identify as female, whose post-sentence home address is in any London borough and is eligible for a community sentence. The individual must also show a willingness to engage with the service and provide informed consent at the time of referral and assessment.

How to Get This Service

You can access our service by either referring yourself (by contacting oxl-tr.londonmhtr@nhs.net) or by asking someone who is involved in your case (such as your probation officer or solicitor) to make the referral to us.

Referrals can be made by anyone but are typically made by probation practitioners based in the court. Typically, the service receives referrals prior to sentencing however the service can also receive referrals for women who are on a community/suspended sentence order and are being breached if it is felt that mental health treatment would be a useful addition to the current order. Referrals must be made prior to sentencing, or breach hearing.
